Welcome to the Roadbuilders Safety Training System (RSTS).  

Whether you are new to the industry or refreshing your knowledge of safe work practices, the RSTS Basic will provide you with the basics of safety and hazard awareness for the roadbuilding and heavy construction industry.   There are seven modules covering everything from general safety awareness and traffic accommodation to utilities and excavation and shoring.  This introductory course will take approximately 3.5 hours to complete.

RSTS – Intro

Welcome to the Roadbuilders Safety Training System (RSTS). In this module, we’ll walk you through how to complete your training and highlight different functions of this learning platform.  We will also give you background information on the RSTS course and provide testimonials from workers in the industry.

RSTS - M01 - The Law at Work 

Work site safety is your business. This module will walk you through Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation as outlined by the Alberta government.  

Course length: 20 min

RSTS - M02 - General Awareness

Like with any construction project, a roadbuilding site is full of hazards that you need to be aware of. This module, you’ll learn how to prepare yourself in order to work safely.

Course length: 25 min

RSTS - M03 - General Roadbuilder Safety

In this module, you’ll learn about “big picture” safety concerns of roadbuilding and how to ensure you can be a safer worker.

Course length: 35 min

RSTS - M04 - Specialized Work

Work is considered specialized when part of that work only happens under certain circumstances. In this module, you’ll learn about basic hazards of different types of specialized work and how to control them.

RSTS - M05 - Traffic Accommodation

When working in construction, it is important to know how to maintain a safe work zone. This module will teach you about traffic control devices designed to keep you and motorists safe.  

Course length: 20 min

RSTS - M06 - Utilities

Some of the most dangerous hazards on a work site are utilities, both below and above ground. In this module, you’ll learn about how to get the job done safely when overhead power lines and underground utilities are in your work area.  

Course length: 25 min

RSTS - M07 - Excavation and Shoring

You already learned about the prep work for excavation in the Utilities module. In this module, we’ll walk you through actual excavation and shoring once underground utilities are located and marked, and how to control the hazards inherent in the work.
